Taylor Swift’s new CD, 1989

Rough draft :) Leave opinions and ideas below!!

To preface this, I probably should mention that the occasion of buying a  new release CD is a once in a lifetime occurrence for us. We just don’t really do that that often.

And secondly, for the following, please keep in mind that I have not listened carefully to the lyrics yet, and still have decided to be ignorant of any correct or real lyrics. Like BT, I choose a few moments of blissful ignorance when trying on new songs. 😀 Thanks!

Okay, preface aside! 🙂

So, we’re walking through Walmart, and I see Taylor Swift’s new CD. No surprise there. I mean, she’s big, the CD is popular, why shouldn’t I see it?

What I didn’t expect was the price tag. Just $11.88 for a BRAND NEW album?? Say what?

Plus, Mom and I had recently been doing some discussing about Taylor Swift – I showed her her new song, “Shake it Off”; I accidentally memorized the lyrics in preparation for a video and submission I will never do; I watched some late night and news snippets about her; Mom caught some of those, too, so she is (positively) in the front of our minds.

And we are both like; we really appreciate the choices she’s making.

So when we see the CD there at a price that we can actually barely afford, we get it. No question, just get it and split the cost.

So, of course, first thing I do when I have a quiet minute is open it up and look inside.

It’s got a packet of faux polaroids!! Entitled “Pictures from Taylor”!! That is pretty cool.

I resist reading the lyrics, but I flip through the lyric booklet. Cool, cool.

I put in the CD, and download it on to my iTunes.

And then I listen to it.

(Of course with the volume up a little 😉 ) (Which, for me, is like regular volume for everyone else…)

I really enjoy that I like the whole CD, and also that it has a common theme. BUT it doesn’t all run together like a big helping of starchy oatmeal (you know those albums, like that?)

The first song, Welcome to New York is like a totally danceable song!! I have played with Rimfire to it several times. I like this one.

I have listened to this album about 5 or 6 times now. 🙂

I am really enjoying a lot of the phrases that are fun to sing, or the beats (Welcome To New York, All You Had to Do Was Stay, and Shake it Off) in some of the songs. In others, it is the “atmospherics” (Wildest Dreams, This Love) that win me over.

(In all honesty, though, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend these songs for everyone at every time. A lot are sad, have questionable morals or actually have a really serious undertone. But they are well-done, and that is so nice to find!!)

Phrases that I’m loving singing:

Because we’re young and we’re reckless, we’ll take this way too far,

It’ll leave you breathless or with a nasty scar

(from Blank Space.)

I really like the breezy way the line:

And I got that red-lipped classic thing that you like

And when we go crashing down

We come back every time

Because we never go out of style, we never go out of style.

….is sung. (This is from the song Style).

Out of the Woods! Oh my gosh!! So sad and so adorable… more like relatable. She keeps thinking that for once something is going to last, but the WHOLE time she KNOWS it won’t. I can like totally understand. It can be a work situation, a friendship, a way of speaking one is trying, or a hope that someone will actually be nice to you. 😦 So sad, but such a hopeful way she conveyed it.

Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods?

Are we in the clear yet? Are we in the clear yet? Are we in the clear yet? In the clear yet? Good!

Shake it Off – do I have to say more? I didn’t like this song at first *GASP* — Sorry, I didn’t. It took me thinking Malinda Kathleen Reese was going to use this as a Google Translate Sings for me to learn the lyrics, and sing along with it. When I tried to sing along with it… I LOVED it! so fuuunn to sing. I couldn’t get over it! 😀 And the video is a little infectious, too. 😀 All styles of dance and her trying each one!! The song’s even won BT over! We heard it on the radio and he turned up the volume. Then when it got to the bridge, all 3 of us (BT, Taylor Swift and I) sang:

My ex-man brought his new girlfriend…

Wildest Dreams: This is one of those “atmospherics” songs which is why it is among my top favs in the album. Again a “love” (or anti-“love”) song — what are they called? But it’s fun. Thinking about picturing someone in a way you probably never saw them, but just like on a movie set, and it’s a great sleeping song!!

Wildest dreams! Ah-haah!

How You Get the Girl – I surprisingly really like this song!! I do not like “Get the Girl” aspect, but my absolutely favorite part of the song is the marriage proposal:

I want you for worse or for better;

I would wait forever, and ever

Broke your heart, I’ll put it back together;

I want you forever and ever;

It’s one of my favorite listening/singing-to lines. I really like it!! — The song is like Miss Swift’s personal advice to help a guy apologize to a girl he likes, I guess! 😀 (she even tells him where he messed up, so he knows what to fix.)

Bad Blood really reminds me of a Lorde song… I am not sure which yet. Um yeah.

The last song on the album is entitled Clean. I think it’s pretty cool. This album definitely feels like a journey (I have read that some albums are set up this way, such as Evanescence’s album ending with Good Enough, and the foreword to this album seemed to suggest such a progression)… and this is like the end. I imagine it hand in hand with Sara Bareilles’s Love Song:

Head under water and you tell me to breathe easy for a while

And Taylor Swift finishes by saying, Nuh-uh! I am done, and better than that, I am even better off! I’m not only breathing again, I got cleaned by swimming!

Rain came pouring down
When I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe
And by morning, gone was any trace of you
And I think I am finally clean

Er, yeah, now when I look at the lyrics, it doesn’t quite look as relieved as listening to them sounded, but er, um, sorry? It sounded like a happy ending. 😕

I still can’t decide if I like the meanings of some of the songs and are they moral, are they okay, etc. etc…. But WHO CARES!! It’s a new album and I’m excited!!!

  1. Thanks for your comment about this CD on my blog post! I did go ahead and buy it and have no regrets.
    And I’m also pleased to say “Shake it Off” actually grew on me as well.
